I will always remember June 26, 2015. On that day, Justice Anthony Kennedy handed down the majority opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges. With the pronouncement of “It is so ordered,” a rainbow wave swept across the United States as marriage equality was legally recognized across the country. Gay couples flocked to the clerk’s office now that they could finally marry after decades of partnership. I ran to Discovery Green and joined my fellow Houstonians in a joyous, impromptu celebration of a dream final achieved.
